"There’s no need for the half of it" I remember my grandfather, “Pappy Hugh” often saying this. Like most of his generation who grew up in 1930’s Ireland, he “made do” growing up and wasted nothing. When he did shop, it was only “local”. Every Saturday he went to the small grocery shop to buy the Irish Times, eggs and fresh bread for Nana. He never crossed the doorway of LIDL when it came to town. I cannot imagine trying to explain Black Friday to him; indeed, his mindful shopping made him an unwitting champion for “Green Friday” ☺

Green Friday is an anti-Black Friday movement started in 2015 to create awareness about the negative impacts of society’s shopping habits. On this day, we are encouraged to reflect on our shopping habits and make better purchasing decisions supporting small or local brands and good causes. Green Friday will run concurrently with Black Friday from November 29th, 2024. It is a counter to the “shop-till-you-drop” mentality of Black Friday. Participating in this year’s Green Friday is simple: purchasing mindfully and sustainably from your local brands.

The case for going green on November 29th is simple and obvious. It is no longer “news” that we are dumping tons of single-wear clothing into landfill and putting the future of our planet at risk through climate change. Approximately 10% of global carbon emissions are linked to the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion deploys low quality materials and low-paid labour and increasingly, today’s trends are tomorrow's trash. When we first started hearing about climate change, it was mostly about the ice melting in the Arctic; it seemed like a far-away far off problem. Most people thought, “Well, I can’t really do anything to stop the melt..can I?”. However, now we are blinded by climate change impacts on our doorstep - over 200 people killed in Spain a few weeks ago when a year’s worth of rain fell on Valencia in one day.

A small change in our shopping habits this season can make a big difference. Even try switching say 30% of our seasonal shopping to deadstock and pre-loved items.  At SourcedBySab, we specialise in deadstock, which is former-season unsold merchandise from brands like Carharrt, Nike, Stussy.. We also stock premium vintage, which is pre-loved high quality, unique tees, hoodies, football shirts and jeans. Recently, in response to demand, we also stock a range of beautiful sustainable jewellery. Our deadstock and premium vintage items have been rescued from the fate of landfill!  We handpick each item, spending countless hours searching for and securing premium pieces for everyday wear. Together with our customers, we are reducing carbon emissions and making a small step towards combating climate change.
