Shop small to make a big difference on Small Business Saturday

On a recent unusually balmy summer evening on the Golf Course Road in Letterkenny, my sister and I came across the smallest business we had ever seen. Three young girls, at most 7 years old, had set up a stall at the gate to their house. On sale were Tayto crisps, several little beaded bracelets, sweets, and some other small odds and ends. The girls were none too shy about offering three for the price of two, and stood their ground when we jokingly tried to negotiate discounts. We pretty much bought the lot and promised to become loyal customers if they kept up their enterprising business through the summer!

What is it about small local businesses that sometimes makes you stop and think? The business owners, the beating heart of the business, are typically the first people to greet you when you enter the business. Unlike in High Street Stores, every customer that gives us the privilege of visiting us merits our attention. We truly want to understand why you came in and we want help you find what you're looking for. Small Business Owners have a certain shared DNA; all have foregone the security of paid employment for a certain risky adventure. If you flung all businesses up to the sky to form a constellation of stars, the large businesses would outshine the smaller local businesses. “Look at me” they would cry. However, the smaller stars would be the interesting ones, each one different to the next, and each one alight with the passion of the founder.

As Small Business Saturday approaches, it is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of supporting local businesses and the unique offerings they bring to our communities.
